To cut down on the waiting list for private offices, coworking operator Workbar is enlarging by two-thirds its flexible office located at 399 Boylston St. in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. The expansion is due to be completed in the spring of 2027, and the coworking space will grow from 12,000 to 20,000 square feet, adding 18 new private offices to the existing 16.
In addition to private offices, Workbar spaces generally come equipped with desks in a common no-noise area, an open work area for taking calls, meeting rooms and a café. Common amenities include a mother’s room, video equipment, phone booths, ergonomic furniture, IT support, custom events, complimentary coffee and tea. The Back Bay location also provides bike storage, a concierge desk, a fitness center, a yoga studio and a hair salon.
“Back Bay has been an incredibly strong market for Workbar, and this expansion reflects the demand we’re seeing from companies across Boston,” said Sarah Travers, CEO of Workbar, in a press release. “They want high-quality workspaces that give their teams flexibility without sacrificing productivity. We’ve always believed people should have access to a network of great environments designed for productivity, close to where they live, work and play. Expanding in Back Bay strengthens that network and gives our members and teams even more flexibility in one of Boston’s most important business districts.”
The 399 Boylston St. building, less than a block west of the Public Garden, is owned and operated by DivcoWest. The real estate investment firm paid $125 million for the building last year and recently completed a $35 million renovation.
“Workbar’s decision to expand at 399 Boylston speaks to the strength of its business and the value and experience the building and location provide,” said Joseph Steffano, senior director of asset management at DivcoWest. “We’re excited to support Workbar’s continued growth with the additional space and flexibility its team needs. We value our tenant partnerships and look forward to working alongside Workbar for years to come. With this expansion, Workbar is continuing its efforts to support the creativity, innovation, and talent Boston is known for, while keeping its one-size-doesn’t-fit-all approach at the forefront of its mission.”
