Two years ago, I completed a two-year MSc Social Work as an international student, paying over £30k just in fees and completing around 170 days of unpaid placement. While the teaching staff within the Social Work department were supportive the university’s wider systems caused significant harm. The admissions, international office, administration, and fee collection teams were consistently unhelpful and threatening. Complaints were ignored, communication was poor, and there was little flexibility or understanding of students’ realities. Before I started it was a nightmare communication issue in the office around visa and start date led me to spend 3k extra on immediate flight ticket as I was told if I don’t start in 2 days visa will be cancelled and 10k paid fees won’t be returned, These people were so un empathic, I was surprised. As we did the course, even after an year of doing placement and passing the course, International students were threatened with visa consequences and placement interruption over fee issues, which caused severe anxiety, sleepless nights, and forced some of us to seek therapy just to cope. This was not limited to international students. Home students, including those relying on bursaries, were also struggling with the intensity of the course and life pressures. Some had bursaries, some were threatened with placement being stopped, despite already managing unpaid placements and academic demands. The lack of compassion was deeply concerning as my course was supposed to be rooted in care, ethics, and social justice. Many staff were aware of what was happening but appeared unable or unwilling to challenge the systems in place. The institutional culture was distressing experience overall. I would strongly caution both international and home students before choosing this university unless they start treating students as people rather than a disposable financial units.

Stop claiming it’s a uni city when it’s always been a proud naval city! Housing is a nightmare including parking is made worse for residents when students arrive! Stop degrading our beautiful city! Very anti residence university!

I am a student and I felt compelled to leave as a result of severe bullying from staff, an issue that has also been experienced by other students.

It was ok, it is however very spread out. I feel I somehow managed to spend more time walking that learning about the university.
