Amazon has subleased a new office building in Santa Clara, CA from coworking space provider WeWork. The deal adds 141,000 square feet to the e-commerce giant’s office footprint.
The six-story building at 4980 Great America Parkway belongs to the Sobrato Organization, a family-owned real estate firm based in Silicon Valley. It was originally leased by WeWork back in May.
In a similar move last December, Amazon subleased 217,000 square feet of office space at 401 San Antonio Road in Mountain View, CA — also from WeWork. This expansion supports Amazon’s ongoing return-to-office plans in the wake of its recently implemented five-day in-office policy.
Subleasing workspaces from WeWork enables Amazon to scale quickly and adapt effectively to evolving needs by avoiding the complexities of leasing and space management.
Amazon has also tapped into this model in other markets beyond California. For example, in Dallas, Amazon partnered with WeWork to sublease an office building belonging to the pharmaceutical corporation McKesson. And, on the East Coast, the company signed a deal for more than 300,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan, NY. WeWork also played a role in Amazon’s expansion in Nashville, TN where the e-commerce giant subleased Asurion’s Gulch headquarters, thereby contributing an additional 100,000 square feet of workspace to its office footprint.
