Please be careful with Houston colleges if you have had a criminal past. Especially Houston community college. I moved to this campus because I was having issues at Lone Star and their screening programs for students with past criminal backgrounds. These organizations will isolate you onto far away classrooms that are not mixed in with regular student population. Professors will treat you indifferently and the students you are mixed in with are not typical students but rather put there to monitor and observe your behavior. These type of classrooms are designed to keep you isolated and contain you from normal student population and contain any potential criminal activity. After all these years I have kept myself out of trouble. Paid all my tickets, got my drivers license, graduated at Lone Star and I’m still being treated like this. One of my classes is not even in Houston but far out in Katy. A very common class that’s easy to find but was only “available” in Katy in a campus where there’s barely any students. I looked for this class early on and on time and the options were still limited. Yeah, what a coincident right. My second class, was also similar circumstances. It wasn’t even in the main building—it was in a smaller one without any of the student resources. It feels like everything about you is already known, making classes uncomfortable, monitored, and discouraging. If your past is extensive with criminal history, this is what you will deal with when trying better your life and pursue an education. They monitor your phone, computer, and every aspect of your life so stay away from their WiFi. Their over use their power and do everything possible to hold you back. Some professors have even presented policies as “the law” which haven’t not always been 100% truthful but plain dishonesty. They will discourage you any way they can while also putting fear onto you for speaking out. I made a review just like this at LoneStar College after graduating with an Associates of Science after 4 long years and it was deleted.. I hoped things would be different at Houston Community College, but it only followed me here too. Ive been screened at HCC as a criminal all over again. Students will literally ask their professor in front of all the class to make the test a 100 questions, or open ended to make it more of a challenge I’ve heard them say. Normal students would never ask for this. I’ve felt labeled and treated differently, with campus police always being present around my normal parking spot before and after class. Or simply always being near me in campus. This has now taken a serious toll on me. & at the moment I have had to drop out of a class in Katy because I couldn’t handle this type of pressure anymore. I am now only focusing on just one course to give myself the chance to pass. My progress and future career are being delayed because of type of discrimination. I’m considering seeking legal help only to bring this the attention it deserves. All I’m asking for is to be treated like a normal student with a normal classroom - I deserve that just as much as anyone else. And to not be discriminated and defined by my past. I’ve taken responsibility of my dodgy past and have worked hard to integrate myself back into society. When you push people back and kick them when they’re down doesn’t create an environment for improvement—as an American Christian country this unacceptable. If you’re also going through this, I hope you speak out and help me and others like us who are also going through this now.
