Traveling Is Our Passion

Mar 03 2025

Hey, we are Vicky 🇵🇪 and Malte 🇩🇪 from the travel blog Traveling Is Our Passion. For a full one-day Pittsburgh guide, check out our blog! PPG Place is one of the coolest spots in Pittsburgh! The glass buildings look super futuristic, and the whole area has a great vibe. Our friends told us, that in winter, there’s a huge ice skating rink in the middle. In summer, the plaza turns into a relaxing space with fountains—perfect for a quick break while exploring the city. It’s also right next to Market Square, where you’ll find great food options. If you're into architecture, don’t miss checking out the reflections on the glass—especially at sunset. A must-see in downtown Pittsburgh!

PPG Place Designer PPG Place was designed by Johnson/Burgee Architects, a firm led by Philip Johnson, a leading figure in modern American architecture, and John Burgee, a pioneer of postmodern architecture. Born in Ohio in 1906, Philip Johnson acquired considerable wealth while studying philosophy at Harvard University. After graduating, he traveled Europe, where he had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of architecture, both old and new. Around 1930, he began interacting with various architectural historians and architects, and became deeply interested in modernist architecture. In 1940, he returned to college to study architecture, aiming to become an architect. John Burgee was born in Chicago in 1993 and studied architecture at the University of Indiana. He served as a trustee and a member of the architecture school committee at his alma mater. Since founding Johnson/Burgee Architects in Manhattan, New York, in 1968, he has made significant contributions to postmodern architecture in the United States. Unlike modernist architecture, which is largely devoid of ornamentation, his refined and decorated architecture was well received by many people, and he designed numerous buildings. After Philip Johnson left the firm in 1991, a series of unfortunate events led to John Burgee's architectural firm going bankrupt, and he retired from the architectural world. Philip Johnson passed away in his glass house in 2005, and John Burgee is now living quietly in California.
