I scheduled a tour with Madi at Utility Works and arrived on time today with my daughter. When I entered, I greeted the group of people who were sitting together and said I was there to meet with Madi. One person stood up and said, “that’s me,” but offered no greeting, no eye contact, and seemed surprised or inconvenienced by my arrival. She then turned to the group and said, “oh, great,” in a dismissive tone. At that moment, I decided not to stay for the tour. The energy in the space felt unwelcoming and unprofessional. First impressions matter, especially in an environment meant to foster creativity and entrepreneurship, and unfortunately, this experience did not reflect that. Update: Response - Thank you for the response, but being “overwhelmed” is not an excuse for unprofessional or unwelcoming behavior. Regardless of how busy a space may be, greeting a scheduled guest with basic courtesy and acknowledgment is a standard expectation. A simple smile or polite welcome would have gone a long way. First impressions matter, and unfortunately, mine reflected a lack of professionalism rather than a temporary rush of activity. I’m not interested in returning and would definitely not recommend this space to others.

Utility Works is a sanctuary for creative folks of all ages. Young entrepreneurs working at the hot desks on the first floor, painters and other artists on the second floor in studios with floor to ceiling windows that provide perfect light for their creative work, and potters, fabric artists and a metal sculptor--me!--in the basement providing camaraderie and supportive ideas for each other. Love this place! It is my sanctuary.
