I had a room looking out at a brick wall full of cigarettes and debris. The rooms are not properly cleaned (dust and hair everywhere)

I had a deeply disappointing and concerning experience while staying at Canal House in Amsterdam on 26 December 2025. Before check-in (around 1:00 PM), I left a Louis Vuitton Neverfull handbag and Chanel sunglasses with reception while I went out for lunch. When I returned at approximately 3:00 PM, checked in, and entered my room, the items were there. I left the hotel again at around 6:30 PM and returned at approximately 11:00 PM to find both items missing. All contents of the handbag had been emptied and left on the desk, including personal belongings and an Apple AirTag. The bag and sunglasses themselves were gone. A hotel staff member searched the room with us, but the items were never located. These belongings were lost while under the hotel’s custody and control — first when entrusted to reception and later while secured in my assigned room. The incident was serious enough that I filed a police report in the Netherlands. What made the situation worse was the lack of effective response afterward. Reaching hotel management was difficult, and no immediate or satisfactory resolution was offered. For a hotel of this standard, security and guest support fell far below expectations. I would strongly advise future guests to be cautious with valuables.

Canal House, Amsterdam 22-24 August 2025 Really poor management. On arrival we were surprised how tired the decor of the hotel was. Our room was nice enough. Had this been the only issue then I’m sure I would have enjoyed the stay. However, on the Saturday we had to make three requests for housekeeping to make up our room and replenish our water. It finally happened at 5pm whilst we were in the room, and we had to sit outside on the garden terrace whilst this was done. Bad form. When we left the hotel on the Sunday, I realised I had left a very precious blanket in our hotel room after our visit. It was a family heirloom, that I’ve had since I was a child. Measured 1m x 1m blanket. It was a little tatty as it was old, but it’s been with me my entire life and meant the word to me. I was devastated when I realised I’d left it in the room and anxious to get it back asap, so I contacted the hotel straight away. I was told that they would look into it, but it quickly became clear that this issue was not important to them. There was absolutely no sense of urgency. No action. No accountability. Every time we tried to contact them we heard ‘Sorry, they’re not in.’ Or ‘Not sure who’s handling it. ‘ or ‘We will get back to you.’ I was fobbed off time and time again. They said they would check the bins, but I’m sure they didn’t, and after about a week, they said “it’s probably gone to the laundry”. Any email correspondence I got claimed they were doing their best to track the item, yet when I replied to emails several times I got no response, the excuse being the person I was contacting was on annual leave. Surely in the circumstances someone else should have stepped in. When my husband persisted with phone calls, they became very abrupt and rude, asking him to stop calling. They never gave us contact details for their laundry no matter how many times I requested it. They hid behind generic emails. I couldn’t speak to anyone. I was so upset over the whole thing, I felt bereft. For a small, boutique hotel, you might expect some kind of personal service. Not here. Once your gone, your gone! The management approach at the hotel was very dismissive and arms length. From our experience to date, I can say the hotel is not well managed. And there is almost certainly a problem with housekeeping. On another trustpilot review we discovered that a guest had found a set of students books under their bed! So, it’s fair to assume that housekeeping standards are not up to scratch, certainly for a hotel that positions itself at the higher end of the market. We booked it because it was endorsed by Mr & Mrs Smith, and was recognised as a ‘small luxury hotel’ of the world. The approach of the hotel does not reflect well on either of these entities, and I’m surprised Mr & Mrs Smith endorse them as usually the hotels they endorse are to notch. We never got the item back. We will never, ever go back to that hotel. And any friends who do decide to say on the ‘Nine Streets’ area, will be directed elsewhere.

What a wonderful stay! We came for our Honeymoon and got upgraded to a room with a beautiful view of the canal! Every single employee went above and beyond! We would definitely stay again!!
