My good friend Phil and I visited Cobalt on Friday 25th September to see a night of African music with Ra-Pasa headlining with Samba Toure supporting. Between us we've seen an awful lot of live music over the years, and this was genuinely one of those special evenings. Samba Toure opened the night playing traditional music on his homemade instrument and was absolutely captivating. Then Ra-Pasa — a three-piece from Mali — were simply mind-blowing. Superb musicians, mixing traditional Malian and African music with blues influences that at times reminded me of Ry Cooder and the American South. Towards the end when they got jamming the y had a touch of The African Led Zeppelin about them!. Brilliant music played by brilliant musicians. But this review is as much about Cobalt itself as the gig. We arrived early and got chatting outside to Rhys, who works at the venue. What a great ambassador for the place. We talked about music, independent venues and how difficult it is for places like Cobalt to survive and thrive these days. He was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and incredibly welcoming. From the moment we arrived he treated us like VIPs, and even came over from behind the bar to say goodbye when we had to slip away just before the end. A fantastic host. We'd popped around the corner to Ernest for something to eat before returning for the gig, and when we came back we managed to get two of the limited seats on the little balcony to the right of the stage — much appreciated as I'm 61 and Phil is 72! The atmosphere once the place filled up was wonderful. What really struck me was the incredible mix of people: teenagers through to people in their 80s, different races and backgrounds, all together enjoying the same music. The older couple sitting near us were absolutely loving it. That's exactly what a great community music venue should feel like. Cobalt isn't simply somewhere to watch a band. It's an independent venue and community space doing something genuinely worthwhile, and places like this need people to use them and support them. So if you're thinking about going to Cobalt — go. Support live music, support independent venues and support the people keeping these places alive. Congratulations to everyone involved with Cobalt, and a special thank you to Rhys for making us so welcome. We'll definitely be back. Five stars without hesitation. If I could give it ten, I would.
Just a real nice place, with real nice music run by some real nice folk. Brilliant night last night. 10/10 would dance again.
