We visited Hicks Lodge Café after a lovely walk with our 4-month-old German Shepherd cross Malinois puppy. She is currently in training with a local company and one thing on the training is making sure she’s socialised and not reactive, which is very normal for a puppy. The café was quiet when we arrived, around six people and a few dogs. We were seated next to the door and had spent around £30 on drinks and soup. When a dog left the café, our puppy barked briefly, which is completely normal and something other dogs in the café were also doing when they left. At the time, there was only one or two dogs inside, seated on the opposite side of the café, and our puppy was not reacting to them at all. Shortly after our food arrived, an older member of staff with ginger curly hair and glasses came over and said, “I know she’s a puppy, but if she doesn’t calm down you’ll need to go outside.” Her tone felt abrupt and unkind. I fully understand that if a dog is constantly barking or being aggressive, it may be appropriate to ask owners to leave and we would absolutely do so ourselves. However, this was a brief bark as another dog exited, and nothing more. What made the situation worse was seeing the staff member walk back towards the kitchen and make a comment to her colleagues, which made me feel very uncomfortable and as though it was about us. My partner felt so awkward and unwelcome that he took our puppy outside, leaving me to sit inside alone with both of our meals. I then had to take his food and drink outside to him, by which point it had gone cold. Other customers in the café were not bothered at all, in fact, they were smiling and giving our puppy attention. The same thing happened while my partner was waiting outside with her, people were friendly and welcoming. She is only four months old and is a very soft, gentle puppy. We have visited this café many times before, prior to having our puppy, and have seen it far busier than this with multiple dogs barking and no comments made to anyone. This is the first negative review I have ever written, but I felt very disappointed and embarrassed by how this situation was handled, especially in a café that promotes itself as dog-friendly.
Nice cafe in National Forest Dog friendly except around the lake. Has a good track although a little wet with all the rain. Nice walk takes 40 minutes at a good pace. The parking is £2.50 for an hour. Good for walks mid week very quiet then. Play area for kids and a wellness centre.
We went there today we didn't eat there had coffees. The girls looked quite miserable and didn't smile much, one of them brought our drinks to the table and didn't say anything. A bit of a shame really as customer service plays a big part.
