Early Modernism circa 1926, “tailor-made” as corporate headquarters for “Austin Reed”, Men’s apparel and tailors. Presents an arresting facade onto Red Lion Square, clad in distinctive (now faded) “biscuit coloured” faience tiles. The recurring panel motif accenting the horizontal/vertical symmetry enhances the surface value. The customised recessed wooden entrance door “illustrated” with tailoring associations and the customised exterior railings adds a bonus touch of individuality to the Grade II Listed building still handsomely turned-out and dressed for the occasion. A plaque on the building’s exterior commemorates John Harrison (1693-1776) legendary horologist, inventor of the world’s first successful marine timepiece that assessed longitude, lived in a house here at the time of his death.
