As a former student, here is my tuppence-worth. In many ways, Keele is closer to a small liberal arts college in the US than to a traditional university such as York or Leeds. The campus is situated on top of a hill, surrounded by agricultural land. When the wind blows, students can hear the cattle from the local farm in the halls of residence closest to the village. A rural location, par excellence, it can be bitterly cold in winter and often snows so woolly jumpers are essential. Even though the M6 is in close proximity, there are some agreeable walks to have in the countryside. However, during my 3 years, I personally found the university to be isolated and remote. At times, you do have the impression you are "cut-off" from the rest of the world (the experience is referred to as the "Bubble" by the student population) and you will grow tired of bumping into the same people twice or three times during the day. Although this could also be said elsewhere, the fact that Keele is so small amplifies it. When the "bubble" finally bursts, the reality of the world of work can be brutal. The library is small and was built to accommodate 2,000 students in the mid-1960s not 12,500 in 2023. Expansion comes at a price and the university has done little to remediate for this. Keele is in dire need of a new, modern library and the science park would be an ideal location. The sports centre could also do with a revamp and an olympic-sized swimming pool would certainly put Keele on the map (Student games etc). Accommodation wise, average and dated. Especially Horwood. Amenities, no large supermarket nearby (unlike Warwick, for example) so you have to travel to Newcastle-under-Lyme which is 5 miles down the road and "Castle" (like the locals call it) since 2002 has a cinema. The high street, like other towns and cities in the UK, is in terminal decline. Unlike university towns like Canterbury or Bath, never any tourists though. Stoke, with its post-industrial wasteland, is a no-go area and students tend not to venture this far out. Most shops are boarded up, it is a depressing place. In your first year at Keele, you travel maybe once come Christmas time to Hanley shopping Centre for novelty and never go back again. It takes 40 mins by bus which is surprising given the distance is only 5.5 miles so a taxi ride is essential for nights out. The challenge will be to find others to come with you. Hence why students stay on campus. Week-ends, the campus comes to a standstill with many going home to friends and family. Student population, many locals from the Midlands, few south of Oxford. University is trying hard to market itself via social media but there is a reason why there are vacancies in practically all subjects during Clearing come mid-August. Keele has always been a "Clearing" University, even back during the 1980s. Basically, the institution that would offer you a place if you underperformed at A 'Level. That has not changed. You can easily bag a place with 2 Cs at A 'Level during Clearing so their website academic entry requirements should be taken with a pinch of salt. Unless, that is, you are aiming for degrees offered by the medical school or from the new veterinary school which are all vocational i.e. leading to specific career paths (and a guaranteed graduate salary) and always popular and in-demand. Not quite sure why there are still 2 universities so close to one another. Staffordshire University, the ex-polytechnic is the other in Stoke. With 3 schools, no faculties and many similar degrees, it would be rational to amalgamate resources (funding etc.) into one regional champion to streamline, achieve economies of scale, improve student experience and use funds elsewhere. Keele is not a terrible university by all standards, more teaching geared than research-led and it will cater for a certain type of student. However, for a modern campus, middle-tier rank university and value for money, I would suggest Reading, Sussex or Kent instead, less claustrophobic and all closer to a decent conurbation...

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL! SCREENSHOOT ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING AND RECORD EVERY TELEPHONE CALL, ON YOUR MOBILE ‘PHONE TO STUDENT SERVICES OR WHOEVER… Communication is dreadful and highly impersonal, except for the occasional, thoughtful person. If you pass several modules, check that someone has not started to mess about with the allocated credits so that you “fail” when you have not technically or that it has bot been recorded that you have “left” when the course came to an end anyway (or you withdrew from another one). They will either refer you to someone called “Caroline” (whoever she is) who will tell you a few times that she will check for you (then you hear nothing) or you will be E-mailed a rather lengthly complaints digital booklet. If you continue to reiterate the fact that the credits have been put in the wrong place or have been reduced and not followecwhat was in print or online, you receive an extremely condescending E-mail about how you should “engage in the University’s procedure” as though you are thick, clueless, uneducated and a person who knows nothing about policies or procedures (when you have worked with policies or even written them for over twenty-five years). If a course is completed in the one year (full-time) for which you are enrolled (with everything electronically submitted) you are told that you need to wait until two years have lapsed (part-timers). This is an equal opportunities issue. Appalling service by people who prefer to “hide” behind a computer, rather than speak to you face-to-face like a mature adult. They pick and choose people who pass here, here and no matter how hard-working, nice and naturally kind you are, they will be rude (deliberately interrupting you before you have time to answer, to make you look stupid, correct you when THEY are actually wrong or ask you to complete lengthy “protocol” forms and complaints to divert you). Absolutely disgusting! The place should be inspected and regulated by an outside regulatory body as with all universities. If someone does not like you or is jealous of you they will make your life extremely difficult. Our advice, contact your M.P. if you think that there is deliberate malpractice and bullying. Universitiies are not OFSTED graded or given a “value added” score. To start changing credits when modules have been passed, when the numbers are stipulated elsewhere is a big con. Perhaps, people are there because they cannot get work anywhere else. The photographs attached do not include the complaints procedure digital booklet.
