I have definitely adopted the tradition of the roast lunch on Sunday. Catching up with family visiting from Australia, we were keen to introduce them to a lunch that can go anywhere between 11am and 9pm at night in some places. We also wanted them to experience the amazingness of a Yorkshire pudding in swish surroundings.
We went for the three course option, which is excellent value.
Some of us started with the Severn & Wye smoked salmon and others went for the wild game terrine. The salmon was good quality, there was a lot of horseradish to pair it with and it was wasabi level intense, so I used it sparingly. The terrine was nice enough - I am a sucker for a good pate or terrine so I was glad I tried it.
For mains we all went for roasts, half went for the pork, the others went for the beef. Both were good and I was glad our visitors got a good example of what we had excitedly talked up on the drive.
The pork meat was moist, the crackling was on point. The beef was nicely cooked and both came with all the traditional comforts: the famed Yorkshire pudding, a decent gravy, and well-executed vegetables.
For dessert I opted for the sticky toffee pudding - which was a nice way to finish. I also tried the crumble, and while it wasn’t incredible, I love crumble most ways it lands so had to give it a go.
Beyond the food, the building and space itself deserves a mention — it’s genuinely beautiful. I felt like a member of the aristocracy being here. It was luxurious.
The service team worked hard to make sure we were well looked after. My preference going anywhere is to be able to go with my large German Shepherd dog. The team really looked after him, bringing him some water and treats. I love being well taken care of when I dine out, but I genuinely appreciate when people are kind and appreciative of my dog. He is very well behaved and tucks in under my table, and to me is never any trouble, but the team here really made us all feel welcome.
Add to that a thoughtfully put-together wine list with some very nice options, and we were all super happy to have spent some time here.
If you’re in the area and weighing up your Sunday roast options, this is absolutely worth the visit. A proper, polished take on the tradition, delivered in a space that makes the whole experience feel like an occasion.
