Although AI work can theoretically be done from anywhere, our analysis shows that where you work still matters: AI job growth is concentrated in key U.S. metros where pay, talent and infrastructure intersect to create opportunity at scale. However, not all metros are created equal.

Across the U.S., AI job growth remains highly concentrated in a relatively small number of metropolitan areas. Large tech hubs like Silicon Valley, New York and Seattle continue to dominate hiring and pay, but a second tier of emerging markets, including Dallas and several mid-sized innovation hubs, is increasingly capturing new AI roles as companies balance talent access with cost considerations.

Quick Jump

National Overview

Large Metros – over 1M population

Medium-Sized – 500,000 to 1M population

Small Metros – under 500,000 population

Methodology

With that in mind, this study identifies which regions are leading in AI industry growth and which offer the strongest mix of opportunity, pay and livability for technical professionals. Accordingly, we analyzed more than 300 metropolitan areas — grouped into large, mid-sized and small population brackets — across employment, salaries, job concentration, cost of living, broadband readiness and coworking infrastructure.

Specifically, we focused on AI-native technical roles — including software developers, data scientists, computer systems analysts, QA testers and related engineering positions — to show where careers building and deploying AI systems are gaining ground. But, New York leads in hiring volume, adding 15,018 new AI-native roles.

High pay, different tradeoffs: AI professionals earn $215,000, on average, in San Jose, CA — the highest in the country. But, with living costs 13% above average, that premium narrows. For comparison, in Dallas–Fort Worth, TX, $128,000 salaries stretch further with costs just 3% above average.

Workplace readiness: New York has the largest coworking footprint with 737 spaces. But, Dallas–Fort Worth combines 54% fiber coverage with 316 locations, offering strong infrastructure at a lower cost base.

AI’s Largest Strongholds: San Jose, New York, Seattle & the Rise of Dallas

In America’s largest metropolitan areas (with at least 1 million residents), AI growth is powered by sheer volume and institutional gravity. As such, these metros absorb vast amounts of capital and talent to create deep AI labor markets, but often at the expense of affordability.

1. San Jose, CA

Silicon Valley anchors the U.S. AI economy. Here, AI work is exceptionally concentrated, appearing at more than six times the national average to make this the most AI-saturated large metro in the country. For example, between November 2024 and the end of 2025, the San Jose metro recorded more than 14,000 new AI-related job postings, second only to New York in raw numbers.

That dominance drives exceptional compensation: Average AI salaries reach nearly $216,000 — the highest of any metro studied. Still, everyday expenses run roughly 13% above the national average, meaning even top-tier wages face meaningful erosion and further highlighting Silicon Valley’s strength in innovation, rather than cost efficiency.

2. New York City Metro

With more than 15,000 new AI job postings, New York surpasses Silicon Valley in sheer hiring volume, offering breadth across multiple industries. Yet, AI roles make up a far smaller share of the local workforce than in Silicon Valley, where specialization runs far deeper.

In the Big Apple, pay averages almost $151,000, which is solid, but not exceptional. Meanwhile, AI roles appear about as often as the national average, showing that New York’s strength lies in variety, as opposed to specialization. New York also has 737 coworking spaces (the most of any metro), adding to its broader business infrastructure.

3. Seattle, WA

Seattle strikes a balance between Silicon Valley’s intensity and New York’s breadth: The metro added 12,726 AI jobs to rank third nationally, and AI roles are nearly three times as common locally as they are nationwide, signaling a sustained and meaningful concentration.

In this case, average AI pay reaches $169,633, supported by solid digital infrastructure, including 41% fiber coverage. But, rising expenses have become a constraint and local living costs sit well above the national average, placing Seattle among the most expensive large metros.

4. San Francisco, CA

San Francisco remains a vital node for AI startups and frontier research. The metro posted more than 8,500 new AI job openings, fewer than neighboring San Jose, but still firmly among national leaders.

In this area, AI salaries average around $178,000, reflecting continued demand for specialized talent. However, that earning power is heavily offset by cost pressures: Local prices run nearly 20% above the U.S. average — the steepest premium among large metros. As a result, that cost gap may influence where AI startups expand and where talent chooses to settle.

5. Dallas, TX

Dallas–Fort Worth offers AI professionals a more affordable alternative to coastal hubs and the metro added more than 6,000 new AI jobs across sectors like enterprise tech, telecom, finance and logistics. Granted, average AI salaries of $128,572 are lower than San Jose or San Francisco, but everyday costs are far more moderate, meaning your paycheck goes further. Plus, strong fiber coverage (54%) and 316 coworking spaces make it easy to stay connected and productive, giving workers access to modern infrastructure without the high living expenses of larger coastal metros.

Fayetteville and Huntsville Lead AI’s Smart-Scale Markets

Mid-sized metros (500,000 to 1 million residents) increasingly punch above their weight in AI. That’s because these regions blend growing talent pools with manageable costs and targeted infrastructure, making them attractive to startups and satellite teams.

1. Northwest Arkansas

Fayetteville, AK, leads medium-sized metros in AI job growth after adding 1,054 new postings between November 2024 and late 2025. And, while the average AI salary of $96,805 trails larger hubs, affordability reshapes the picture.

Specifically, local prices run well below national norms, allowing wages to stretch significantly further.

That said, AI roles are present, but not yet dominant, appearing slightly less often than the national average and suggesting an ecosystem still in formation. Even so, infrastructure is already strong with 70% fiber coverage and 16 coworking spaces supporting collaborative growth.

2. Huntsville, AL

Huntsville stands out for intensity, as opposed to scale. AI roles are nearly five times more prevalent locally than across the U.S. overall, making it one of the most specialized AI labor markets among medium metros.

The metro added 391 AI jobs with average pay reaching $127,166. What’s more, infrastructure is well-aligned with its aerospace and defense focus, including 62% fiber coverage. Living costs also remain relatively restrained, sitting below the national average and helping preserve real earnings while supporting the metro’s highly specialized AI workforce.

3. Research Triangle

Durham–Chapel Hill, N.C., continues to mature as a research-driven AI hub and the metro added more than 500 AI jobs with average salaries of $127,732.

Notably, AI roles are more than twice as concentrated here as they are nationally. Additionally, fiber coverage stands at 42%, and 32 coworking spaces support collaboration. With living costs only modestly above national norms, the region balances competitive pay with quality of life.

4. Bridgeport, CT

Bridgeport offers high pay within a broader AI market: The metro added 378 AI jobs, and average salaries reach $147,265 — among the highest in this size tier.

Here, costs reflect the area’s proximity to New York with everyday expenses running noticeably above the national average. Otherwise, AI hiring in Bridgeport accounts for about the same share of total local jobs as it does nationally, suggesting steady participation in the sector, rather than the kind of deep specialization seen in dedicated tech hubs. Fiber coverage is 35%, while 45 coworking spaces support hybrid and distributed teams.

5. Des Moines, IA

Des Moines combines steady AI growth with strong efficiency. The metro added 421 AI jobs, and AI roles appear somewhat more frequently than they do nationwide, signaling moderate specialization.

Meanwhile, average salaries of $110,730 pair well with affordability as local prices remain well below U.S. averages. Infrastructure is another major strength: 71% fiber coverage and 22 coworking spaces allow AI firms to scale without the overhead of larger markets.

Small Markets, Big AI Focus: Boulder & the Rise of Niche Hubs

Smaller metros often trade scale for focus. In markets with fewer than 500,000 residents, even a modest number of AI roles can represent a significant share of the local workforce, signaling genuine specialization. Combined with strong livability and targeted infrastructure, these hubs can be especially attractive to startups and research-oriented teams.

1. Boulder, CO

Boulder leads small metros in both pay and specialization: The metro added 416 AI jobs from November 2024 to the end of 2025, and average salaries reach $177,851 — the highest in this category.

Here, AI roles are more than three times as common locally as they are nationwide, reflecting a dense innovation ecosystem tied to startups and academia. Although fiber coverage is moderate at 46%, coworking infrastructure is unusually strong with 33 spaces. Living costs also sit close to the national average, preserving much of Boulder’s high compensation.

2. Princeton, NJ

Trenton–Princeton, N.J., shows strong momentum, leading small metros with 685 new AI job postings. In this area, salaries average $125,652 and AI hiring represents a higher-than-average share of the local job market, underscoring a developing specialization relative to the metro’s size.

What’s more, fiber access reaches 23% of serviceable locations, and 20 coworking spaces support collaboration. And, although costs run slightly above average, proximity to New York expands career mobility and access to a deeper regional job market.

3. Ann Arbor, MI

Ann Arbor continues to benefit from strong university-industry collaboration. Accordingly, the metro added 420 AI jobs with average salaries more than $119,000.

Here, AI roles appear at about the same rate as nationally, but infrastructure supports sustained growth with 41% fiber coverage and 17 coworking spaces. Plus, living costs remain just below the national average, reinforcing Ann Arbor’s appeal as a balanced AI market.

4. Lake Charles, LA

Lake Charles is an extreme case of specialization: AI roles are more than 14 times more concentrated locally than they are across the U.S. — the highest level of specialization among small metros studied.

That said, total postings remain low at 22, reflecting the small labor pool, but average salaries of $103,307 translate into meaningful real income locally. Otherwise, fiber coverage reaches 50%, but coworking options are minimal. Thus, with living costs well below national norms, Lake Charles offers strong real earning power for professionals in highly specialized AI roles.

5. Rochester, MN

Last, but not least, Rochester blends health care-driven AI demand with strong infrastructure. As such, the metro added 141 AI jobs with average salaries of $133,314.

AI roles appear slightly more often than the national average, supported by exceptional fiber coverage at 76%. Although, coworking availability is limited to four spaces, living costs remain comfortably below U.S. averages, supporting strong real income for professionals in healthcare-focused AI roles.

Methodology: How We Analyzed the Data

This study analyzed more than 300 metropolitan statistical areas with populations of more than 50,000, excluding metros with missing data and no coworking spaces.
